From Global to Rural - the Story of BRAR (Bellingen Rural Australians for Refugees), March 26th

Horrified by the Howard government's handling of the 'Tampa' incident, and shocking reports from Woomera and Villawood detention centres, Bellingen people came together in October 2001 with a determination to do something to help asylum seekers.
Irene Wallin and Anne Simpson look at how the linking of small rural communities around Australia resulted in a unique grassroots action.

Some stories shake a nation, others slip away ... the lives of 353 people on board the SIEV X - mostly women and children - were lost. This movie, about SIEV X survivor Amal Basry 'is an inspiration to all Australians who hope for better treatment of refugees in the future' (Julian Burnside).
At this screening paid for by the non profit distributors Cinema Ventures Ltd, filmmakers Steve Thomas will speak and answer questions about 'Hope'

The Bellingen Institute invites you to come and participate in a discussion forum, as we jointly explore what participation means to all of us at this time. We are asking for your help in setting the topics that you believe we should explore in our series of seminar and forum events for this year.
